It is never recommended to consume a worm as the hunger reduced is negligible. It is much more valuable as bait in fishing or trapping .

Hello, As SailorWolf rightly said, the composting process takes around an in game month now. You will get a visual indicator when there's compost to be collected (looks like the bin is filled with dirt). When you right click on the compost bin it will say how much compost there is available, and you have to have a sack to collect it.
That means compost is much more important in the game: Gathering enough compost for the winter (how much, i don't know, i'll test it for you!) is an alternative to freezers. I have a high level in farming so i have lot's of rotten cabages -> More compost. I have also thrown the rest of the early game's rotten fruits/vegetables into the compost bin.

It takes quite a bit of time for the rotten food to turn into compost -- 3 or 4 weeks, if I remember right. You'll also need a sack to be able to "harvest" the compost from the composter. I have the sack and everything, and I'm pretty sure I've had food in there for a good while, but it just says it's 0% full. Oh! From my understanding, the bin also has to be outside, exposed to the weather. After that, you can use a sack to remove the fertilizer. I actually rarely bother to use the fertilizer though.
