The Freedom Group bought Marlin and Remington thenstarted cutting corners. Rust and quality control issues followed. I've got an older 870 that doesn't have rust issues, that said the maverick 88 is going to be a better buy for a new production shotgun. Probably the most bang for your buck in the shotgun world.
Posted March 6, 2008. The Maverick has a cross-bolt safety behind the trigger guard. The 500 has the slider safety on the top rear of the receiver. Otherwise, they're pretty similar. The Maverick is the cheap house-brand shotgun from Mossberg.
