Direct access brokers really has more to do with the type of software imo. ToS by TDA is not direct access software. The hotkeys aren't good enough, you cannot choose your routes, but the execution speeds are ok most of the time to be fair. IB could be a direct access broker if you use Sterling software or DAS Trader Pro.
