I had a couple S&W pistols handed down to me from family 39-2 9mm and 422 22lr and have had a blast shooting them at the range but wanted something of my own choosing.
Remove the extractor. Lock the slide open. Seat a fully loaded magazine. Allow the slide to move forward at full speed by pushing down on the slide stop. If the first round out of the mag feeds fine, the extractor is the problem. It has incorrect geometry, too much deflection, too much tension, or all three.

Mar 14, 2021 · Remove the extractor. Remove the firing pin if you want to be extra cautious. Seat a fully loaded magazine. Depress the slide stop to allow the slide to move forward at full speed. If the cartridge chambers and the pistol goes fully into battery then the extractor is, in fact, causing the feeding malfunction.
