The oil pan on the older J models is smaller . The newer P style has a larger pan that extends under the unit. Note some of the later 700 series volvos came with the P series lay****.

There is a lockout for the exhaust brake which will automatically take the unit out of O.D. if you turn on the exhaust brake. There is also a lockout for 4wd.If you are doing the gear venders to save money I'd just stick with what you have. It will probabaly take a very, very long time until the unit pays for itself and you see any savings.
